Imagine doing yoga without any effort. No straining, stretching, lifting or contorting. You just lie there while someone powerfully yet gently stretches, realigns and releases all your tight muscles. The result is a profound sense of relaxation and well-being – this form of massage will become very popular over the next few years. In some ways it’s better than Swedish Massage and, best of all, it’s nearly as relaxing and beneficial for the giver as it is for the recipient.
Thai yoga massage works on a system of energy lines known as Ten Sen which run through the body. It is believed to have arrived in Thailand with Buddhism in the 3rd century. Now gaining popularity in the West, it acts as a balancing treatment for the whole body. Hands, feet and legs are used to create stretches and apply gentle but firm pressure.
This is a very physical and involving form of massage yet non-damaging to the body of the giver. Indeed that is the reason Phyllis Martin (LM’s resident expert and co-author of the workshop) took up this speciality – her wrists were being injured the constant pressure of Swedish Massage. A few stretches and some self-care are enough for most people to give massages regularly without issue. However, imagine pressing most of your body weight through your wrists and hands for hours every day.
The receiver is fully dressed in loose garments and the only equipment required is a Thai Massage Mat. We provide these during the workshop and will show you how to fashion one from everyday household items so you are always ready to do this massage.
This is an introductory workshop suitable for absolute beginners, enthusiastic amateurs and even qualified therapists from other disciplines. No experience necessary; couples, singles and groups of friends all welcome. You will learn the background theory and how to use your body to work on other people safely. You will also learn and practice a full routine which covers:

Massage Swapping Community
What’s better than giving a massage? Receiving a massage in exchange.
We’ve all got friends who are happy to receive a massage but it’s nice to also receive massages. It’s also easy to get out of the habit of giving massages and lose the confidence and skill you built up. Edinburgh is full of friendly talented people who have learnt massage yet it can sometimes be hard to find someone to swap with.
So ChillSoc and LearnMassage are starting a massage swapping community. We’ll have organised social nights in places where swapping massages is possible. We’ll start a FaceBook page so people can stay in touch with each and host their own massage nights.
And it’s all going to be free. If you’re interested please let us know, we’d like your input about the best way to make this happen.
